(4-nitrophenyl)methyl (2S,4S)-4-acetylsulfanyl-2-[[(2-methylpropan-2-yl)oxycarbonyl-sulfamoylamino]methyl]pyrrolidine-1-carboxylate is used to synthesize the penem antibiotic Doripemen.

Doripenem is a new type of carbapenem antibiotic developed by Shionoyoshi Company of Japan. It has a broad antibacterial spectrum and is stable to most β-lactamases, including penicillinase, cephalosporinase and extended-spectrum β-lactamase. Amidases (ESBLs).
