N-ALPHA-T-BUTOXYCARBONYL-DL-HOMOPROLINE is the protective form of pyricolic acid. Piperolic acid is an intermediate metabolite of L-lysine. Its accumulation in the body is characteristic of infant peroxisomal diseases such as Zeilweiger syndrome. Piperolic acid is also used as a catalyst in asymmetric Mannich reactions.
