Dibenzylidenea-cetone is a pale-yellow solid insoluble in water, but soluble in ethanol. Dibenzylidenea-cetone is used as a component in sunscreens and as a ligand in organometallic chemistry.

Dibenzyl a-cetone can be used as ligand to prepare palladium catalyst, which is widely used in catalytic hydrogenation, coupling, carbonylation, cyclotrimerization of alkynes and so on. For example, palladium-catalyzed Negishi reaction between halogenated hydrocarbon and organic zinc, StilleChemicalbook reaction between halogenated hydrocarbon and organic tin, Suzuki reaction between halogenated hydrocarbon and organic boron, Heck reaction between halogenated hydrocarbon and olefin, etc. These reactions have a wide range of applications in the synthesis of natural products, polymers, functional materials, liquid crystal materials, and bioactive compounds and drugs.
