2-Thiophenecarboxaldehyde is used in the synthesis of β-aryl-β-amino acids, urea derivatives. Arylation reagent. Also used to synthesize unsaturated ketones as antiviral and cytotoxic agents.

Used as intermediates of broad-spectrum anthelmintics, thiouracil and drugs, such as vanamycin 1 and 2. Used to introduce thiophene groups into organic compounds, for example, by introducing thiophene groups into dimethyltetrahydropyrimidine. The product was salted with dihydroxynaphthalic acid to prepare pyrimidine, a broad-spectrum deworming agent.
